Making Process

Extraction Process of Advait's Sesame Oil

Cold pressing is a form of extraction method done at room temperature and does not involve heat which can break down the natural nutrients or at times alter the composition of the oil.

1. Locally Grown

Sesame seeds are grown locally at our regenerative farm and partner farms which practice traditional and natural agriculture. This helps us monitor the quality and purity of the final product.

2. Seed Selection

Sesame is threshed manually and harvested to get high quality seeds that are graded based on their ripeness and oil content to ensure they contribute to the rich flavour and nutritional content of the oil.

3. Cleaning and Sorting

After harvesting, the seeds undergo a thorough cleaning process to remove any impurities, dirt, or debris.

4. Cold Pressing Process

The hallmark of Advait Living's sesame oil lies in the cold pressing method. Seeds are manually pressed in a traditional wooden chekku/ghani at very low rpm to obtain the oil. No toxic heat or chemical solvents are added and no external heat is applied. No chemical processing of any kind is deployed at any stage. This ensures the natural flavour and nutritional properties of the mustard oil remains intact.

5. Naturally Sedimented

Following the cold pressing, the raw and unrefined mustard oil is allowed to sediment for a couple of days. This step allows any impurities or particles to settle at the bottom.

6. Cold-filtration

After the sedimentation period, the oil undergoes a careful filtration process using a cheesecloth. This step removes any remaining particles or sediment, leaving behind a clear and pure sesame oil.

7. Packaging

The final product, now a fresh and aromatic virgin sesame oil, is elegantly packaged in glass bottles. The choice of glass ensures that the oil remains uncontaminated by external factors and retains its pristine quality until it reaches the consumer.

How To Use?

Cold pressed sesame or gingelly oil is a versatile product deeply rooted in Indian traditions. Its unique flavour profile and health benefits make it an essential component in Ayurveda, Indian cuisine, and skincare routines. Here's an overview of how it's used in these different contexts:

I. Ayurvedic Applications:

In Ayurveda, sesame oil is considered one of the most versatile and beneficial oils, known for its warming and nourishing properties. Some common uses include:

  1. Abhyanga (Body Massage): The practice of body massage with sesame oil is believed to improve circulation, detoxify the body, and calm the nervous system. The warm oil is applied all over the body, followed by a warm shower to remove any excess oil.
  2. Nasya (Nasal Application): A few drops of warm sesame oil can be applied to the nasal passages to relieve dryness and promote clear breathing.
  3. Oil Pulling (Gandusha or Kavala): Swishing sesame oil in the mouth for a few minutes daily is said to support oral health, reduce bacteria and promote healthy gums.

II. Culinary Uses:

Cold pressed sesame oil is a staple in some South Indian cuisines, offering a distinct flavour and aroma. It's used in various ways, including:

  1. Tadka (Tempering): Sesame oil is commonly used to temper spices and herbs, which are then added to sambar, rasam, curries, chutneys, and lentil dishes, infusing them with a rich, nutty flavour.
  2. Cooking Medium: It has a high smoke point, making it suitable for deep-frying and sautéing. It is a popular practice to deep fry Vadas made from urad dal in gingelly oil during festivals.
  3. Flavour Enhancer: A few drops of raw cold pressed gingelly oil can be drizzled over finished dishes for an extra layer of flavour. It's also used as a topping (drizzled over idli podi or powder) in dishes like "idli" and "dosa," traditional South Indian breakfast items.
  4. Stir frying: Common in Asian cuisine, where its high smoke point allows for quick and high-heat cooking.
  5. Sautéing: Adds a mild nutty flavour to vegetables, meats, and seafood.
  6. Deep frying: Particularly used in Indian and East Asian dishes for its high smoke point and resilience to high temperatures.
  7. Dips and Chutneys: Perfect for making tahini, hummus, or traditional Indian chutneys.

III. Skin and Hair Care Uses:

Til ka tel is known for its moisturizing and healing properties, making it a popular ingredient in skincare routines:

  1. Moisturizer: It's used as a natural moisturizer for dry skin, often applied after bathing to lock in moisture.
  2. Hair Care: Sesame oil can be massaged into the scalp to nourish hair and promote growth. It can also help reduce dandruff and dryness.
  3. Wound Healing: Its antibacterial properties make it a useful addition to homemade balms and ointments for minor cuts and abrasions.

Oil Baths: During Diwali, the festival of lights, many Indian families uphold the tradition of taking an oil bath as part of the early morning rituals. This practice, deeply rooted in ancient customs, involves applying warm sesame oil (gingelly oil) to the body and scalp before bathing. The oil massage is believed to cleanse the body, relax the mind, and ward off negativity, symbolizing a fresh start. It's a ritual that signifies renewal, prosperity, and harmony, reinforcing the festive spirit of Diwali.

Is gingelly oil cold pressed?

Gingelly oil can be cold pressed, but it's not always the case. Gingelly oil and sesame oil refer to the same product, derived from sesame seeds. When the term "cold pressed" is used, it indicates that the oil is extracted without using heat or chemical solvents, preserving more of its natural nutrients and antioxidants.

Let's explore what cold pressed means and how it relates to gingelly oil.

What Does Cold Pressed Mean?

Cold pressed oil is extracted through a mechanical process that doesn't involve heat or harsh chemicals. This method retains more of the oil's natural flavour, colour, and beneficial compounds.

In the case of sesame oil, cold pressing involves crushing sesame seeds to extract the oil, ensuring that its nutritional content remains intact.

How to Identify Cold Pressed Gingelly Oil?

To know if gingelly oil is cold pressed, look for specific indicators on the product packaging or label:

  • "Cold Pressed" or "Unrefined" Label: The packaging should explicitly state that the oil is cold pressed or unrefined. This confirms that the oil was extracted without heat or chemicals.
  • Colour and Aroma: Cold pressed gingelly oil often has a rich golden colour and a distinctive nutty aroma, indicating minimal processing.
  • Sediment or Cloudiness: Cold pressed oil may retain some natural sediment or cloudiness, suggesting it hasn't been refined or filtered extensively.

Benefits of Cold Pressed Gingelly Oil:

Cold pressed gingelly oil offers several advantages over refined oils:

  • Higher Nutrient Retention: The cold pressing process retains vitamins, antioxidants, and healthy fats that may be lost during heat-based extraction methods.
  • Better Flavor and Aroma: Cold pressed oil has a more robust and authentic flavour, enhancing culinary dishes.
  • No Additives or Chemicals: Since no harsh chemicals are used in extraction, cold pressed oil is typically purer and free from additives.

Are All Gingelly Oil Cold Pressed?

Not all gingelly oil is cold pressed. Some gingelly oil is extracted using heat or solvents, resulting in refined oil. Refined gingelly oil may have a longer shelf life and a more neutral flavour, but it typically lacks some of the nutritional benefits and rich flavour of cold pressed oil.

How do you know if sesame oil is cold pressed?

Identifying cold pressed sesame oil is crucial for ensuring you're getting a high-quality product that retains its natural nutrients, flavour, and benefits.

Here's how you can tell if sesame oil is cold pressed:

What is Cold Pressed Sesame Oil?

Cold pressed sesame oil, also known as gingelly oil or til ka tel, is extracted from sesame seeds without the use of heat or chemical solvents. This gentle extraction process helps preserve the oil's natural nutrients, antioxidants, and distinct flavour.

Cold pressed oil is typically unrefined, making it a healthier choice for culinary and personal care applications.

Signs That Sesame Oil Is Cold Pressed:

To ensure the sesame oil you're purchasing is cold pressed, look for the following indicators:

  • Labelling and Packaging: The most reliable way to determine if sesame oil is cold pressed is by checking the label. It should clearly state "cold pressed" or "unrefined." Some products may also indicate "expeller-pressed," which is similar to cold pressed but may involve slightly more heat.
  • Colour and Clarity: Cold pressed sesame oil tends to have a rich golden colour. It may also have a slight cloudiness or natural sediment, indicating minimal processing. If the oil is clear or lacks depth in colour, it might be refined.

  • Extraction Process: Cold pressed oils retain more natural nutrients, but without the preservatives used in the refining process, they don't have an extended shelf life like refined oils.

Tips for Extending Shelf Life:

To ensure your Advait Living cold pressed sesame oil lasts as long as possible, consider the following tips:

  • Keep It Sealed: After opening, ensure the bottle is tightly sealed to prevent exposure to air, which can cause oxidation and rancidity.
  • Store in a Cool, Dark Place: Avoid storing the oil near heat sources or in direct sunlight, as this can accelerate spoilage.
  • Use a Clean Utensil: When dispensing the oil, use clean utensils to avoid introducing contaminants that could reduce its shelf life.

Is cold pressed Sesame oil beneficial for body massage? How to Use it?: Advait Living's Sesame oil (gingelly oil) is excellent for body massage. In Ayurveda, sesame oil is used as a base for many remedies. Sesame oil is believed to possess warming properties, making it ideal for pacifying Vata dosha (the energy that governs movement in the body) in Ayurveda. Ayurveda highly recommends the daily practice of ‘abhyanga’ (self-massage) and sesame oil (gingelly oil) is considered the best oil to use. Not only, does sesame oil help nourish the skin, it promotes circulation, relaxes muscles, and helps in detoxification. Regular massage with sesame oil can also improve joint flexibility, alleviate stress, and induce relaxation. It can also help improve the flow of Prana Vayu throughout the body and strengthens the body.

Simply take sesame oil in your palms and massage the oil into the skin using long, sweeping strokes on the limbs and circular motions on the joints. Leave the oil for 10-15 mins to allow the oil to penetrate the skin and provide therapeutic benefits. Follow it up with a warm shower or bath to remove any excess oil.

Is cold pressed Sesame oil beneficial for hair? How to Use it?: Advait Living's Sesame oil is excellent for hair.
It is packed with good essential fatty acid such as omega 9 and traces of omega 3 (monounsaturated fat) and omega 6 (polyunsaturated fat), that could help nourish the scalp and improve hair growth. Sesame oil also contains several minerals such as copper, iron, vitamin B-1, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese and zinc which can help restore lost nutrients to hair follicles, improve hair elasticity, and prevent hair breakage.  Sesame oil is an emollient, meaning it fills cracks and spaces in the scalp with lipids, and help soften skin and make the hair appear smoother. Its antimicrobial properties help fight off scalp infections, dandruff, and other microbial growth, promoting a healthy scalp.

Simply massage warm sesame oil into the scalp and roots of the hair. Leave the oil for 30-40 mins to allow the oil to penetrate the skin and provide therapeutic benefits. Follow it up with a warm shower and head bath to remove any excess oil.
