    Making Process

Advait Living Wood Pressed Castor Oil: Follow Our Journey from Seed to Bottle!

The making of Advait Living Wood Pressed Castor Oil is a meticulous process with each step carefully crafted to preserve the natural goodness of the castor seeds.

    Wood Pressing with Mara Chekku:

Extracting oil from castor seeds using a wooden chekku, also known as a wooden ghani or marachekku, is a traditional method deeply rooted in Indian oil extraction processes. A wooden chekku is essentially a large wooden press used to crush oilseeds and extract oil.

The history of wooden chekkus in Indian oil extraction dates back centuries, with the technique being passed down through generations. It is revered for its simplicity, efficiency, and ability to produce high-quality, cold-pressed oils without the use of heat or chemicals.

Today, despite modernization in oil extraction methods, wooden chekkus continue to be valued for their role in preserving traditional practices and producing premium quality oils.

Wood Pressed Castor Oil Extraction Process:

At Advait, from seed selection to bottling, every stage of the process is conducted with precision and care, resulting in a truly exceptional product that embodies the essence of purity and quality.

    I. Seed Selection and Preparation:

The process begins with the careful selection of castor seeds. Only the finest quality seeds are chosen for extraction. These seeds are then meticulously dehusked and cleaned to remove any impurities, ensuring that only the best seeds are used for oil extraction.

    II. Drying in Sunlight:

After cleaning, the seeds are spread out in the sunlight to dry. This step is crucial as it helps to remove any residual moisture from the seeds, which can impact the quality and shelf life of the oil.

    III. Seed Crushing:

Once dried, the seeds are transferred to a wooden chekku. The process begins with placing the castor seeds inside the chekku, followed by manually rotating the pestle to apply pressure. This pressure causes the seeds to release their oil, which is collected at the bottom of the barrel. The wooden construction of the chekku allows for a slow and gentle extraction process, preserving the natural flavours and nutrients of the oil.

    IV. Oil Separation:

The extracted mixture is then transferred to a large container, where hot water is added. This mixture is boiled and the oil is separated from the seed pulp.  Pure castor oil is collected for further processing.

    V. Filtration and Sedimentation:

The collected oil is then filtered through a cheesecloth to remove any impurities or sediment. Once filtered, the oil is left to naturally sediment, allowing any fine particles to settle at the bottom of the vessel. This additional step helps to further clean the oil, ensuring its purity and clarity.

    VI. Bottling:

Finally pure, golden-hued castor oil is carefully bottled in glass jars to be enjoyed by you.

Can Cold Pressed Castor oil Be Used During Pregnancy?

There is substantial evidence supporting the safe use of cold pressed and organic castor oil as a natural method for labor induction. In ancient times, castor oil was often recommended to pregnant women to accelerate uterine contractions. This may be attributed to the activation of EP3 prostanoid receptors, which are present in both the intestine and the uterus, when castor oil breaks down into ricinoleic acid. Research suggests that this mechanism may aid in inducing labor.

Please consult your doctor before using it for inducing labour.

Wood Pressed and Hexane-Free Castor Oil is also known as

    • Raw or unrefined castor oil
    • Cold pressed castor oil
    • Arandi Ka tel / arandi oil
    • Edible castor oil
    • Erand oil

Key Features of Advait Living's Pure and Unrefined Castor Oil

    1. Pure and Authentic: Advait Living's wood pressed castor oil is 100% ‘raw, unrefined and cold pressed’ Castor oil. It is also called ‘virgin’ mainly because it is ‘single pressed’ without repeated pressing of the seeds for extraction of additional oil. This makes it one of the highest-quality oil and is often ranked as a “Grade A” oil. No chemical processing of any kind is done. Zero preservatives, additives or blending is done to get 100% pure and edible castor oil.
    2. Cold Pressed vs Wood Pressed Extraction Process: Advait Living's castor oil is obtained using traditional methods and equipment such as a wooden crushed mara chekku/Ghani. Fresh castor seeds are mechanically pressed on a traditional wooden (or stone) chekku/ghani and without the use of any toxic heat or chemical solvents and without any external heat application, making this oil both ‘wood pressed’ and ‘cold pressed’.
    3. Hexane-Free Castor Oil: Commercially produced refined castor oils are extracted using heat solvents such as ‘Hexane-gas’, a chemical solvent derived from petroleum. Use of hexane-gas and similar solvents increase the yield of oil, making it more cost-effective. However, such extraction methods make the initial oil non-edible and reduces it quality. Such oils require extensive refining and chemical cleaning before they are made available in the market. Advait Living's hexane-free castor oil is obtained without the use of hexane or any toxic heat solvent, making it 100% safe, pure and packed with higher nutrition.
    4. Is Advait Living’s Cold Pressed Castor Oil Edible?: One of the most loved feature of Advait Living's cold pressed castor oil is its safety to be consumed orally. The distinct viscous thick and golden-hued colour sets it apart from other commercially available castor oils. It is loved by our patrons who use this castor oil frequently for its therapeutic and medicinal uses.

Health Benefits of Edible Castor Oil

Edible castor oil is known for its medicinal properties and has been used in Ayurveda and ancient medicine for thousands of years. But what is little known is the fact that castor oil has a broad spectrum of uses.

One of the main components of castor oil - ricinoleic acid which is a monounsaturated fatty acid, constitutes to about 90% of the total oil composition of the oil. This makes it unique as compared to other vegetable oils. Ricinoleic acid is an omega-9 fatty acid that is known to possess anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies show that this fatty acid reduces swelling and pain caused by inflammation.

Castor oil also has bioactive active compounds such as vitamin E components (tocopherols or (tocotrienols), phospholipids and phenolics among others making it suitable for many health applications.

Below are some of the health benefits of organic castor oil:

    • Powerful Laxative
    • Induces Labour in Pregnant Women
